Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt that something was off?

Or spent time with someone and come away feeling completely exhausted, even though nothing particularly dramatic happened?

You might describe that as feeling drained, picking up on someone else's energy, or simply needing to get away and have some time to yourself.

Whatever language you use for it, learning to recognise how different people, places and situations affect you can be an important part of looking after yourself.

And no, protecting your energy doesn't mean you need to walk around imagining you've got an invisible forcefield around you all day. Although, some days, that would probably come in handy!

So, what does it actually mean to protect your energy?

For me, protecting your energy is really about being aware of what you're taking on.

We interact with people all the time. We listen to their problems, support friends and family, go to work, deal with stressful situations, scroll through social media and generally get on with life.

Sometimes we can take on more than we realise.

You might find yourself thinking about someone else's problems long after the conversation has finished. You might feel emotionally exhausted after being around a particular person. Or perhaps you notice that certain environments leave you feeling uncomfortable or unsettled.

That doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong or that someone has "bad energy".

Sometimes you're simply tired.

Sometimes you've had too much going on.

And sometimes your intuition is telling you that you need to pay attention to how something is making you feel.

The important part is noticing.

Why is protecting your energy important?

Because you can't keep pouring from an empty cup.

I know it's a phrase you've probably heard a thousand times, but there's a reason it gets used so often.

If you're constantly looking after everyone else, listening to everyone else's problems and putting your own needs at the bottom of the list, eventually you're going to feel it.

Protecting your energy gives you permission to stop and ask:

"What do I actually need right now?"

Sometimes the answer might be rest.

Sometimes it might be space.

Sometimes it might be a boundary.

And sometimes it might simply be getting away from your phone for an hour!

Start by paying attention to how you feel

One of the simplest things you can do is start noticing patterns.

How do you feel after spending time with certain people?

How do you feel when you walk into certain places?

What happens when you've been around a lot of noise, people or stimulation?

And how do you feel when you're finally alone and have some quiet?

You don't need to analyse every feeling or decide that every uncomfortable moment has a spiritual meaning.

Just notice.

Your body and your intuition can sometimes give you information before your logical brain has caught up.

Boundaries are a big part of protecting your energy

This is probably one of the biggest ones.

You are allowed to say no.

You are allowed to not answer the phone.

You are allowed to take some time for yourself.

You are allowed to decide that a particular conversation isn't something you have the energy for.

And you don't have to feel guilty about it.

Having boundaries doesn't mean you don't care about people. It means you understand that you have limits too.

You can love someone and still need space from them.

You can support someone without taking on everything they're going through.

And you can listen to someone without making their problems your responsibility.

Not everything you feel belongs to you

This is something I talk about a lot when it comes to spiritual awareness.

Sometimes you can walk into a room and notice a change in how you feel.

Sometimes you can be talking to someone and suddenly feel heavy, uncomfortable or unsettled.

Before deciding that you've picked up someone else's energy, though, check in with yourself.

Have you eaten?

Have you slept?

Are you stressed?

Have you had a long day?

Are you already feeling overwhelmed?

We're human beings, and sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one.

But if you've ruled those things out and something still doesn't feel right, it's okay to take notice of that feeling.

You don't have to immediately work out exactly what it means.

Give yourself time to reset

Sometimes protecting your energy doesn't need to involve anything complicated.

Go outside.

Have a shower.

Put some music on.

Sit somewhere quiet.

Spend some time away from your phone.

Take a few deep breaths.

Do something that makes you feel like you again.

If you have spiritual practices that help you feel grounded — meditation, crystals, visualisation, prayer or whatever works for you, use them.

There isn't one correct way to reset your energy.

Find what works for you.

And don't forget your digital energy

This is one that can be easy to overlook.

We talk about protecting ourselves from people around us, but what about everything we're constantly consuming?

Social media can be a lot.

One minute you're looking at something funny and the next you're down a rabbit hole of bad news, arguments, opinions and other people's problems.

If you regularly finish scrolling feeling anxious, angry or completely overloaded, maybe that's your sign to put the phone down.

You don't need to know everything that's happening all the time.

Sometimes protecting your energy means logging off.

You don't have to protect yourself from everything

This is important too.

Protecting your energy doesn't mean becoming afraid of people, avoiding every uncomfortable situation or assuming that anyone who makes you feel tired has negative energy.

Life isn't always comfortable.

People have bad days.

We have bad days.

Sometimes we're the ones bringing the energy into a situation!

The goal isn't to walk through life trying to protect yourself from everything around you.

It's to become more aware of what you're taking on and what you actually need.

A little reminder...

You don't have to be available to everyone all the time.

You don't have to fix everyone's problems.

You don't have to explain every boundary you set.

And you don't have to feel guilty for needing some time to yourself.

Protecting your energy isn't about shutting yourself off from the world.

It's about staying connected to yourself while you're moving through it.

So next time you feel drained, overwhelmed or just not quite yourself, stop for a moment and ask:

"What am I carrying that isn't mine?"

And perhaps more importantly:

"What do I need to put back down?"
